What paperwork is required for a semi truck running for-hire, interstate?

The paperwork that you are required to have depends on where and what you are planning to haul. In addition to the standard formational business paperwork of Articles of Organization or Incorporation, EIN Number, and Operating Agreement, you are required to have a core group of paperwork mandated by the FMCSA that constitutes your authority.

The bare minimum you will be required to obtain from the FMCSA is a DOT Number, MC Number, BOC-3 Filing, UCR Registration, IFTA License and Decal Stickers, IRP (Apportioned Plate Registration), and Heavy Vehicle Use Tax (IRS Form 2290). Mandatory compliance items are enrollment in a Drug & Alcohol Consortium and Driver Qualification File for each driver, including if the owner is the driver.

If your authority is based in a state that has additional requirements, or you frequently operate in a state that has additional requirements, or your type of operations have additional requirements, you will need to obtain those as well before beginning operations. Our expert staff is available to consult you about your particular requirements and offer the right service to help you get on the road.
