What is the TxDOT Number and Who Needs It?
A TxDOT Number (also known as the TxDMV Certificate Number) is specifically issued for CDL commercial vehicles whose base state is Texas. CDL carriers from out of state who operate in Texas are not required to register for a TxDOT Number. The TxDOT Number must be displayed in a visible location on the registered commercial vehicle.
The TxDOT Number is part of the intrastate motor carrier registration process handled by the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles (TxDMV), and it is required for operating a commercial motor vehicle within the state of Texas.
Texas charges a state filing fee of $200, plus an additional $10 per vehicle. Before you file for a TxDOT Number, you must already have an active USDOT Number. Once your application is submitted, your insurance company must file a Form E with the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles to confirm active coverage. Once the required fees are paid, the state will issue your active TxDMV Certificate Number, confirming your motor carrier registration is current.
All Texas-based motor carriers with a gross vehicle weight (GVW) over 26,000 pounds. are required to have a TxDOT Number. This includes vehicles or combinations of vehicles that exceed the weight threshold. In addition, Texas-based household goods movers, hazardous materials haulers, and private or for-hire motor carriers, regardless of GVW, must obtain a TxDOT Number.
Out-of-state carriers operating in Texas are not required to obtain a TxDOT Number, but they must still maintain compliance with FMCSA regulations, including Unified Carrier Registration (UCR) and other applicable federal requirements.
The certificate of registration is non-transferable between carriers and must be renewed in accordance with TxDMV guidelines. Motor carriers must ensure their insurance remains active and that all vehicles are accurately listed under their registration
