What Do IRP Plates Cost?

IRP fees depend on a large number of variables, but range from $500 to $1,000 for hot shots and $1,200 to $2,500 for semi-trucks. Due to the differences between the way new IRP plate fees are calculated vs. renewals, fees for plates are never the same year to year.

Typically, IRP registration fees are based on miles traveled in each jurisdiction and your base jurisdiction’s additional registration fees. This means that every year you renew your IRP, the fees will vary depending on where you drove the previous year. For first-time IRP filers, the fee calculation is different. Because new motor carriers do not have actual miles to report yet, each state generates pre-established estimated mileage that is used for new account setups. If you operated under another IRP (International Registration Plan) account prior to setting up a new one, those actual miles need to be provided.

IRP plate costs also vary based on gross vehicle weight, number of axles, and your registered fleet size. When you apply for apportioned registration, you'll also need supporting documents like Form 2290 Schedule 1 for use tax, your cab card, and other credentials from the DMV. Apportioned fees cover your commercial vehicle’s license plate and legal ability to operate across state lines. Always ensure your records are audit-ready to avoid delays or fines during the IRP process.
